Hill Country Nature Trail
A cool-climate journey through Sri Lanka's central highlands — cloud forest treks in the Knuckles Range, tea country in Nuwara Eliya, the cliff-edge views of Horton Plains' World's End, and the hill town of Ella.
Your Route
A loop through the central highlands, from cloud forest to cliff edge to hill-country town.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
An easy pace across four days, moving from misty peaks to open moorland to tea-covered hills.
Kandy to the Knuckles Mountain Range
A short drive northeast of Kandy into the Dumbara Mountains, named for their 34 peaks resembling the knuckles of a clenched fist.
- Guided trek through cloud forest, home to over 1,000 plant species and rare endemic wildlife
- Visit a waterfall along the trail and, where accessible, a traditional highland village
- Overnight at a nature lodge near the range
Knuckles to Nuwara Eliya
Climb further into the highlands to Sri Lanka's best-known hill station, known as "Little England" for its cool climate and colonial character.
- Tour a working tea factory and tasting room
- Walk through Nuwara Eliya's colonial-era old town and Victoria Park
- Overnight in Nuwara Eliya
Horton Plains & World's End, then on to Ella
An early start for Horton Plains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage plateau at over 2,100m — the earlier the arrival, the clearer the views before the mist rolls in.
- Walk the plateau's circular trail to World's End, a sheer 870-metre cliff drop
- Stop at Baker's Falls, a 20-metre waterfall within Sri Lanka's largest area of cloud forest
- Afternoon drive to Ella, arriving in time to settle in before evening
Ella
A final morning in the hills before your onward journey — Ella is easily combined with the south coast or Yala by scenic train or road.
- Hike Little Adam's Peak through tea plantations for sweeping views over Ella Gap
- Visit the Nine Arch Bridge, a 1921 colonial-era railway bridge built without steel
- Drop-off at Ella, or continue by road to your next destination
