A short drive to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka's second ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, best explored by bicycle.

- The Royal Palace ruins of King Parakramabahu I, once seven storeys with roughly 1,000 rooms
- Parakrama Samudra — the vast 12th-century reservoir the garden-city was built around
- Continue on to Kandy in the afternoon (≈3.5 hours)

A full day in Sri Lanka's hill capital, centred on its most sacred Buddhist site.
